A Mainsail Velcro Clew Strap is used to attach the clew of the mainsail to the boom, providing a secure and quick connection. It's also used at reef points and wherever non-fastener holding is desired. These straps are stronger and safer than traditional clew slugs because they wrap around the entire boom, distributing the load and providing a more robust connection.
-
Construction:A clew strap typically uses tubular polyester webbing with hook and loop webbing (Velcro) to wrap around the boom and through the clew of the sail.Advantages:Clew straps offer several advantages over traditional clew slugs:
- Strength: They are stronger because the strap wraps around the entire boom, not just the extruded lips, according to one source.
- Safety: They are safer because the strap distributes the load over the entire boom, reducing stress on any one point.
- Speed: They are easy to attach and release
Other Uses:Besides attaching the clew, they can be used at reef points, which are points on the sail that are used to reduce its size when sailing in strong winds. They can also be used wherever a non-mechanical fastener holding is needed
Sizes available:3/4" webbing x 27" Long Used on Boats like SR 21, J 70, Harpoon 5.2 and smaller keelboats under 26'.
